Broken
M
Rodger Maxwell © 2005
Tucked into a corner of the low
foothills
Along the caldera’s rim
In a place forgotten and
forlorn
Lies a ranch called the Broken
M
Lincoln Young, he found the
spot
He’d turned left on a
whim
Then just a place unknown and
unseen
Starts the ranch called the Broken
M
Hard scrabble ranching from the
start
Each day was hard and
grim
But it was his this little
spread
This ranch called the Broken
M
In town one day he met his
Anne
She set his head a’swim
He married her and they were
there
On the ranch called the Broken
M
There was Davey Joe and
Stevie
Sally and little Clem
Rebecca Sue and Judith
On the ranch called the Broken
M
Old Lincoln, again alone, he
mused
How it used to be back
then
It was all that was left
today
Of the ranch called the Broken
M
It was a good life he said to
himself
No regrets at journey’s
end
A happy heart and
grandchildren
As I leave this old Broken
M
